Privacy Policy

Overview
Location Studio is an Android app that records GPS traces, replays them as mock location, plans routes on a map, and imports and exports GPX files. This policy explains what data the app accesses and how it is handled.
Data We Do Not Collect
We do not ourselves collect, store, or transmit personally identifiable information (PII). Limited data is received by the third-party services described below (Mapbox, Google AdMob and Google Play) under their own privacy policies. Specifically:
- The app does not upload your recorded traces, saved routes or imported GPX files; only the route waypoints you place are sent to Mapbox (see Maps and Route Planning)
- We do not run any server that receives your data
- No account, login, or registration is required
- No usage analytics or crash reporting is collected by us
Location Access
The app uses your device's location to record GPS traces and to show your position on the map. Recorded points are written to GPX files in the app's private storage on your device, and the app does not upload them. You can revoke location permission at any time through your device settings.
While you record a trace or replay one, the app runs a foreground service with a visible notification. It stops when you stop the recording or replay.
Mock Location
If you select Location Studio as the mock location app in Android Developer Options, the app can replay a trace or hold a fixed position as your device's location. Other apps on your device will see that location, so navigation and any other app that trusts your location can be affected. The app does not send it anywhere itself, but any app that receives it handles it under its own privacy policy.
Maps and Route Planning (Mapbox)
Maps are displayed using the Mapbox Maps SDK, which loads map tiles over the internet. Mapbox may receive technical data such as your IP address, the area of the map you view, and device and usage information, as described in its privacy policy. The map can show your position on screen; that position is read on your device.
When you plan a route, the coordinates of the waypoints you place on the map are sent to the Mapbox Directions API to calculate a road-snapped route. Waypoints you place are the only coordinates the app itself sends. See Mapbox's Privacy Policy.
Files You Import and Export
You can import GPX files using the system file picker and export traces as GPX files. Files are read or written only where you choose, and are not transmitted by the app. If you share an exported file with another app, that app handles it under its own policy.
Advertising (Google AdMob)
The app displays ads served by Google AdMob unless you buy Premium. AdMob may collect device identifiers and usage data to serve personalized ads in accordance with Google's privacy policy. You can opt out of personalized advertising, or reset your advertising ID, in your device's Android settings (Settings, Google, Ads).
For more information, see Google's Privacy Policy.
Premium Purchase (Google Play Billing)
The app offers a one-time Premium purchase that removes ads and raises the daily limit on route calculations, which each send waypoints to Mapbox. Purchases are processed entirely by Google Play Billing. We do not receive or store any payment information. Purchase data is governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
Permissions
The app requests the following permissions:
- ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION — to record precise GPS coordinates for traces and show your position on the map
- ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION — requested together with precise location; on Android 12 and above you can choose to grant approximate location only
- ACCESS_MOCK_LOCATION — to provide replayed or fixed locations to other apps when you select Location Studio as the mock location app
- FOREGROUND_SERVICE — to keep recording and replay running while the screen is off or the app is in the background
- FOREGROUND_SERVICE_LOCATION — required for foreground services that use location
- POST_NOTIFICATIONS — to show the notification for an active recording or replay
- INTERNET — to load maps, calculate routes and serve ads
- ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE — to check network availability
- BILLING — to process the Premium purchase through Google Play
- READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE — on Android 12 and below, to import GPX files from your device (Android 13 and above needs no storage permission for the file picker)
Retention and Deletion
Traces and routes stay on your device until you delete them in the app or uninstall it. The app is not directed at children under 13. If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this URL with a new "Last updated" date.
